His assessments of the economy come after Biden repeatedly touted the country’s 3.4 percent unemployment rate, the lowest in decades. Biden and his economics team have also pointed to several months of consecutive declines in key inflation indicators.

The AP-NORC Poll comes as multiple studies show there is a close race for the White House, with Biden narrowly leading former President Donald Trump.

Biden’s troubles with the economy come as he enters high-stakes negotiations with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. House Republicans are demanding spending cuts as the price for lifting the debt ceiling. Bankruptcy could plunge the economy into recession, but severe spending cuts could also halt growth while hampering the agenda Biden wants to pursue.

Biden’s support is far from absolute within his own party. About half of Democrats polled approve of his handling of guns and immigration policies.
