Leonardo DiCaprio Finally Addresses Controversial Hip-Hop Birthday Party Video, Saying ‘It’s True’ That He’s Always Been A ‘Hip-Hop Head’

Leonardo DiCaprio spoke briefly about his cringe-worthy and controversial rap video while promoting Killers of the Flower Moon.

The actor has come under fire for his rapping skills in a video from his 49th birthday party in Beverly Hills last weekend, where he rapped Gang Starr and Nice & Smooth’s 1994 song DWYCK.

Many on social media have compared the video to Kendall Roy’s (Jeremy Strong) awkward rap at his father Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) birthday party on HBO’s Succession.

DiCaprio was discussing Killers of the Flower Moon with co-star Lilly Gladstone when the controversial video came up in a AND interview.

When the interviewer said that it was known that Leo has always been a hip-hop fanatic, Leo said, “That’s true.”

When asked if he was thinking ahead to the next big birthday, Leo said, “You always have to think about 50.”

As for his taste in music, Leo added: “I have a range of musical love going back to our 20s, 30s and 40s stuff with jazz and blues and stuff like that. And then also hip-hop.’

His co-star Gladstone added: “That’s actually a way we bonded early on talking about music. We had a way to connect.”

Leo added, “And then we also talked about old jazz music,” and when the interviewer asked about the chemistry between them, Gladstone said, “I mean, I think we just get along really easily.” I attribute it to my dad being a Scorpio, so I know how to be around Scorpio men.”

When asked about the awards rumors during the season, DiCaprio said they would both be “honored” if it resulted in Oscar nominations.

“We’re very proud of this film, and I couldn’t be more proud of it,” DiCaprio said of the film, which is currently in theaters.

The film is DiCaprio’s sixth with iconic director Martin Scorsese, who Leo says “has been a cinematic father figure to me, just as Mr. De Niro has.”

They have previously worked on 2002’s Gangs of New York, 2004’s The Aviator, 2006’s The Departed, 2010’s Shutter Island and 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street. Leo added that he looked up to both Scorsese and De Niro.

He called them both “the great duo of my generation, and to be able to make six films now with Marty and 30 years after my first leading role (in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape), to make a film with the three of them was mind-blowing.”

Leo had praised Lily earlier, who is already garnering Oscar buzz for her performance, and grew up on the Blackfeet Nation reservation in Montana.

“She brought so much, not just to her character, but to the entire film. She was a great partner to have,” DiCaprio said of Gladstone.

Gladstone added: “It’s a big responsibility and it’s terrifying. It’s hard being a Native actor and having so much to audition for. Yes, Marty showed me it was possible.”
