Lennox Head search continues for missing swimmer who disappeared at popular beach near Byron Bay

A frantic search for a man who disappeared beneath the surf at a popular beach near Byron Bay continues into its second day.

Emergency services were called to Main Beach at Lennox Head at around 3.20pm on Christmas Eve after reports that a swimmer in distress had been seen in the water.

Police immediately launched a search for the man, which continued into the early evening, but were unable to find him.

Authorities resumed their search around 7:30 a.m. Christmas morning to locate the man, described as white with brown hair.

The search involves local police, Surf Lifesavers, Marine Rescue NSW and a rescue helicopter.

No one has been reported missing at this time, a NSW police spokesperson confirmed.
