Leicester have launched ‘urgent legal proceedings’ against the Premier League and EFL in the ongoing row over their alleged breach of spending rules.
The Championship club, who only won the Premier League title eight years ago, have been placed under a transfer embargo by the EFL under the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) – which Leicester say are ‘both restrictive and premature’.
On Wednesday, Leicester were charged by the Premier League with breaching the top flight’s spending rules, which ban clubs from losing more than £105 million in a three-year period.
They are on course for promotion this season, but their bid for survival could be hampered by a significant points deduction, although it is highly unlikely that a points penalty could be imposed this season.
The transfer embargo has no practical effect at this stage of the season as the window is still closed, but Leicester are furious at the EFL’s decision.

Their statement read: ‘LCFC has today been forced to commence two urgent legal proceedings against the Premier League and the EFL. LCFC will ensure that each of these proceedings is assessed by an appropriate and fully independent legal panel.
‘The Club is committed to ensuring that any charges against it are determined correctly and proportionately, in accordance with the applicable rules, by the appropriate authorities and at the appropriate time.
‘We reaffirm the club’s position that we will continue to fight for the right of Leicester City and all clubs to pursue their ambitions, especially where these are reasonably and fairly achieved through sustained sporting performance.
‘The Club further notes that the EFL will issue a public notice at 4pm today that LCFC has been placed under a registration embargo under its P&S Rules.
‘The EFL is aware that LCFC has challenged the EFL’s right to impose this restriction, which is both restrictive and premature given that there is still well over a quarter of the Club’s 2023/2024 reporting period remaining.’
