Although Lego has many products featuring the different versions of Batman, the latest set is based on Batman: The Animated Series perhaps their best yet. The massive 4,210-piece set will cost $299.99 when it becomes generally available on April 4. However, members of the Lego Insiders Free Entry program can purchase the set early, starting April 1.
In addition to serving as a vehicle for the astonishing voice talents of Mark Hamill and the late Kevin Conroy, Batman: The Animated Series was an afternoon chapter that had a profound impact on how we experienced pop culture for anyone who spent our formative years steeped in ’90s animation. This era in Batman animation also gave us one of the best Batman films to date: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.
Like many other licensed Lego sets, the Gotham Skyline set is full of sly nods and references for fans of the animated series. Gotham’s crimson skyline is punctuated by police airships, the Batwing, and of course, a massive Bat-Signal calling the Caped Crusader into action. At street level you’ll find a collection of some of Gotham’s most infamous locations, such as the Gotham Opera, the Ace Chemical Plant, and Arkham Asylum.
Parts of the set’s facade can even be removed to reveal daguerreotype pieces highlighting some of the Dark Knight and the Rogues Gallery’s most famous (and infamous) escapades.
The set also includes Wayne Manor, complete with the underground Batcave hidden beneath, which houses a removable miniature model of the Batmobile.
To complete the set, Lego has added four unique minifigures of Batman, Catwoman, Harley Quinn and the Joker, which stand on a gargoyle-laden parapet.
