Legendary drummer Gary Young dies at 70: Tributes pour in from bandmates and fans for Pavement star

The original drummer of American alternative rock band Pavement has died at the age of 70.
Gary Young, who left Pavement in 1992, died Thursday, according to the group’s frontman Stephen Malkmus.
Malkmus announced his death on social media, saying his drums were “one take and hit record.”
He said, “Gary Young passed away today. Gary’s sidewalk drums were ‘one take and hit record’…. So well squeaked. Rest in peace.’
Record label Matador Records, which released the 1992 debut album Slanted and Enchanted, also shared a tribute on social media.

It added: ‘We were extremely lucky to know the wonderful human being, drummer, producer and solo artist Gary Young. Much love to his family, friends and bandmates today.”
Young drummed in Pavement through their 1992 album Slanted and Enchanted, after which Steve West took over.
He also produced two songs on Pavement’s 1999 EP Major Leagues and joined the band on multiple dates of their 2010 reunion tour.
A joint tribute from Pavement remembered Young as a “fearless fireball”, stating: “We all loved him and it was life-changing to have a staggering weapon to play music with.”
Tributes also poured in from fans on social media, with one user saying: Deepest condolences. I loved his performance.’
Another said, “I hate hearing this. Most underrated drumming I’ve ever heard.’ Another user added, “I’m really sorry for your loss. What a wild beauty he was.’
