Leeds United’s hopes of survival have taken a hit after Tyler Adams was forced to undergo surgery with a hamstring injury.

The USMNT midfielder missed the Whites’ 4-2 win against Wolves after the problem was detected in training. As a result, he was forced to retire from international service.

Now Adams is set for an extended period sidelined after club doctors decided he needed surgery.

Leeds are still assessing how long the 24-year-old will be out, but his absence will be deeply felt.

The United States was able to survive without Adams during its 1-0 victory over El Salvador on Monday night.

He clinched the Stars and Stripes place in the CONCACAF semifinals, to be played in June.

Adams has started 24 of 27 Premier League games this season after moving to Elland Road from RB Leipzig last summer.

The 24-year-old was brought to Leeds by former manager and fellow countryman, Jesse Marsch.

Adams is a product of MLS’s New York Red Bulls, having passed through their academy before first-team performances caught the eye of the older German brother.

Willy Gnonto and Max Wober are also doubts about Leeds’ fitness ahead of their visit to Arsenal on Saturday after picking up minor injuries on international duty.

Javi Gracia’s men occupy 14th place in the table but sit just two points from the relegation zone.

The Whites’ next turn is league leaders Arsenal at the Emirates, followed by Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace, both at home.
