Former Arsenal player Lee Dixon praised Man City goalscorer Cole Palmer during the Community Shield on Sunday.

The 21-year-old scored in the 77th minute as City took control of the Community Shield clash, but a late equalizer from Leandro Trossard saw Arsenal take the game to penalties and the Gunners win.

Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri both missed their penalties as Arsenal won 4–1 in the shoot-out.

Speaking to ITV during the clash, Dixon said he believes Pep Guardiola has a ready replacement for Riyad Mahrez in Palmer.

What a talent this guy has. Mahrez is leaving, is there a chance for him?’ he said. “He’s already had one chance, absolutely no chance for Ramsdale, he bends it, absolutely brilliant.

Riyad Mahrez joined Al-Ahli this summer as he agreed a permanent departure from Manchester City

“Wonderful, wonderful opportunity and he is taking it. Could be the winner. Partey thought he had it, he used the defender’s body and it just bends away.”

Speaking after the match, Palmer opened up the rout when he admitted his team was upset to lose on penalties.

“Very close, discouraged from conceding in the last minute, that’s football and we pick ourselves up and go again,” he said before discussing his goal.

“When I got the ball, Walker just told me to get it, Pep told me to be myself. When I came in I saw the far corner and luckily it went in.’

Linked to leaving on loan this summer, the 21-year-old has continued to discuss his future and set out his goals for the season ahead.

He said: “I need to see what the plan is for next season, see where I play and hopefully play as many games as possible.

“Hopefully we can win the treble again, but that will be a difficult task. The boys were sharp in training and hopefully we can do it again.’
