Lee Carsley reveals who will captain England against Greece – after the interim Three Lions boss announced Harry Kane will miss the Nations League clash through injury

Lee Carsley has confirmed that Harry Kane will not take part in England’s Nations League match against Greece on Thursday.

After leading England to the European Championship finals this summer, Kane has made a flying start at club level, scoring ten goals in nine games in all competitions for Bayern Munich.

The 31-year-old provided an assist in Bayern’s draw against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday but was later taken off injured after a collision with an opponent.

Kane’s fitness remained a hot topic in the following days, but Carsley has now confirmed that the England captain will not lead the team at Wembley.

At the 2024 Euros, Kyle Walker was Kane’s vice-captain but despite returning to the England squad for the first time since the tournament, Carsley has not selected the full-back to wear the armband.

That honor will instead be awarded to Walker’s Manchester City teammate John Stones.

Since being handed his England debut by Roy Hodgson in 2014, Stones has earned 81 caps for his country but has never started a match as captain.

After the 30-year-old’s impressive first campaign at Everton, then Toffees boss Roberto Martinez insisted Stones had a future captain for the Three Lions.

‘When he was very young and in the first-team group, he took information on board and was the one who wanted to know everything.’ Martinez said in 2015.

‘He wanted to know more about the team, he is not only happy with the fact that he knows what his role is. He likes the responsibilities.

“You saw a 21-year-old handle that pressure and play that way. For me it shows he has the potential to become England captain.”
