Lee Carsley remains a contender for the permanent England job despite the embarrassing loss to Greece.
Mail Sport understands that Carsley has not completely ruined his chances of a permanent job, although it is acknowledged that the loss to Greece, ranked 48th in FIFA, has put pressure on the coach.
The Football Association are two months into the appointment of Gareth Southgate’s long-term success after Carsley became interim head coach for the entirety of their six-match Nations League campaign.
His extremely attacking team selection, which undoubtedly caused major defensive problems in the loss to Greece, has raised doubts about Carsley’s suitability for the position.
And while the loss has not improved the 50-year-old’s chances at the top job, the possibility of Carsley being promoted from his previous job as under-21 head coach remains a viable option for the FA.

The FA will review England’s performance against Ireland on Sunday before determining whether Carsley remains a contender
The governing body will assess Carsley’s performance after the match against Ireland on November 17, when a decision on whether he remains in the trial is likely to be made.
The FA has sounded out external candidates, including Pep Guardiola, Eddie Howe and Graham Potter among the names on the organisation’s shortlist.
It is understood formal interviews for the vacancy are yet to take place, but external candidates at the top of the shortlist are aware of the FA’s interest.
Guardiola is seen by many within the FA as a dream candidate. But the Manchester City manager, whose contract expires at the end of the season, earns around £20million at the Etihad Stadium, a figure well above the FA’s budget.
But there is a view that the project to revamp the England national team could appeal to Guardiola, provided he is given the level of control he needs to make the job attractive to him.
Howe is privately open to the England job but remains happy with his role at Newcastle. It is unclear whether the FA is willing to enter into negotiations with Newcastle about releasing his contract. Potter is currently out of work and can be hired with minimal hassle.
Chief executive Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott, who have recently become a highly visible presence in England, have been tasked with overseeing the process.

Meanwhile, Carsley is ready to make some changes to the forward-thinking side that caused the loss to Greece.
Bukayo Saka could miss the match due to a suspected hamstring injury, while Marc Guehi, who missed the match against the Greeks, could return to the starting line-up.
Harry Kane, who missed the Wembley defeat through injury, could also return.
“We are going to assess him, he will train with us tomorrow (Friday),” Carsely said of his captain. He has scored a lot of goals. I’ve played three games and he’s scored two goals, so he’s a big part of what we do.”
