Could LeBron James already be planning a departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, and if so, could that destination be a third stint in Cleveland?
Speculation about a possible return to the Cavaliers arose after LeBron was spotted on the court watching Cleveland play the Boston Celtics in the NBA playoffs.
NBA insider Brian Windhorst told ESPN Radio that James’ performance at this game brings back memories of when he first returned to Cleveland – and that another reunion could be on the cards.
“I will say this, the first thing that came to my mind was this moment ten years ago when LeBron showed up to a game in Cleveland while playing for the Miami Heat to celebrate the retirement of Zydrunas Ilgauskas in Jersey, his old teammate.
“And he got on a private plane and flew from Chicago to Cleveland on a bad night. Pat Riley was not happy. And a few months later he signed with the Cavs…
LeBron James may have been ‘up to something’ by showing up to a Cleveland Cavaliers game
James was in town for Mother’s Day and appeared on the court for Cleveland’s playoff game
Rumors about LeBron James’ unhappiness with the Lakers have been circulating for almost the entire season
“He is extremely strategic and I wish I could tell you I knew exactly what he does. I don’t pretend to know, but he must be up to something.’
Earlier in the day, Windhorst said on ESPN’s “Get Up” that LeBron was in Cleveland for Mother’s Day
There might be a way to keep LeBron in the colors of the Los Angeles Lakers: if they would draft his son, Bronny, and hire the head coach he wants.
According to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, James wants the team to draft Bronny and hire JJ Redick as their next head coach.
But according to Smith, there could be a roadblock in the way: “Bronny James might not make it to the Lakers’ second round. Because if a team like the Dallas Mavericks could position themselves to get him in the second round, they’ll get him. Because LeBron said he wants to go where his son goes.
“And if you’re the Dallas Mavericks, and you’ve got Kyrie, and you’ve got Luka, and LeBron James is willing to come to Big D, that could be the first time something is more popular than the Cowboys.”
Rumors of LeBron’s unhappiness with the Lakers have been circulating for months as the team struggled throughout the season.
The Lakers finished with a 47-35 record and won their play-in game against the New Orleans Pelicans. But in the first round, they fell to the Denver Nuggets in five games.
