The 10 ‘unpopular’ baby names Aussie parents refuse to pick for boys and girls in 2024 – and you might be surprised
The ten least popular baby names among Australian parents for 2024 have been revealed.
McCrindle Research released its annual report on baby names and while Isla and Oliver topped the list, there were several names that dropped out of the top 100 altogether.
The girls’ names Charlie, Jasmine, Claire, Gracie and Lilly have declined in popularity over the past twelve months; this also applies to the boys’ names Connor, Ashton, Vincent, Elias and Jaxon.
‘Traditional’ boys’ names, including Charles and Harry, also saw the biggest decline between 2022 and 2023.
Charles just entered the top 100, dropping to number 99, while Harry fell 17 places to number 35.
The girls’ names Charlie, Jasmine, Claire, Gracie and Lilly have declined in popularity over the past twelve months, as have the boys’ names Connor, Ashton, Vincent, Elias and Jaxon.
It was no surprise that Oliver reigns supreme on the boys’ names list for the eleventh year in a row. Noah took second place, followed by Henry, Leo and Theodore.
Isla was named the most popular girl’s name for Gen Alpha, followed by Amelia, Charlotte and Olivia. Harper re-entered the top ten after appearing in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Luca, William, Charlie and Jack achieved seventh to tenth place in that order.
Isla made another comeback to the top spot, dropping Charlotte, who reigned supreme for seven years from 2014 to 2021, to number three.
Amelia sat between them in second place, and Olivia, Mia, Ava and Matilda retained their places in fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.
Harper, Lily and Hazel make their entrance into the top ten among the girls, where they leave behind Ella, Grace and Willow from 2023.
Ten names entered the top 100 for the first time, including Miles, who made the biggest jump of all names, from 101 to 48.
