Leaked texts reveal how Kevin Rudd was left baffled by his face appearing on a Barbie meme
Australian ambassador to the US Kevin Rudd was stunned when his own team used his face in a Barbie meme, revealing embarrassing leaked lyrics.
The embassy’s social media staff attempted to join the global Barbie bandwagon last month by sharing a photo of the former prime minister’s face recreated from a movie poster.
“If you get the wrong memo and think Margot Robbie is hosting a Barbie this weekend (weekend),” the caption read.
The post was met with widespread astonishment, with many wondering what the joke was intended, beyond the obvious Barbie/BBQ pun.
Most confused was Dr. Rudd with private messages, released under freedom of information laws, revealing he was in the dark about the misguided attempt at humor.
‘Hi. What’s the Barbie post about?” Dr. Rudd sent a message to the embassy’s minister-advisor for strategic communications, Damien Miller, about an hour after the image was posted, late that evening in Washington, the Western Australia reported.

“This week in the US, there was a trend among some celebrities, senators, the governor of Michigan (etc.) to capitalize on the hype surrounding the Barbie movie. In our case it was in honor of Australian actress Margo Robbie (sic), a co-producer of the film,’ Mr Miller explained.
Other leaked texts between staff show that the embassy’s social media manager appears to have sent the post via WhatsApp to an advisor to Dr Rudd shortly after it went online.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Sorry I just saw it. You better not get fired, that’s great,” the consultant replied two hours later.
“Haha, phew, I’m glad you like it. “It was like THIS IS A GREAT IDEA,” the embassy worker replied.
Dr. Rudd’s second-in-command, Deputy Chief of Mission Paul Myler, congratulated the staffer for the meme.
“The Kevin Barbie meme is very good. Well done,” Mr. Myler wrote.
“It was that, or KR as Oppenheimer,” Mr. Miller replied the next morning.
The reference was to Christopher Nolan’s epic about the father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, which hit theaters the same weekend as Barbie.
Now it turns out that the former prime minister, Kevin Rudd (pictured), was just as baffled as everyone else
The staff of dr. Rudd seemed to laugh at the meme, despite being nervous about how it would end up with their boss, who is notorious for his fiery temper

Although it was well received by embassy staff, internet users were baffled.
“Something is being smoked at the Australian Embassy and I don’t think it’s meat on a hotplate,” one reviewer wrote.
Others wondered why the tagline reads “He’s just Kevin” when Barbie’s love interest in the movie is named Ken and she goes by the name of Dr. Rudd could have been abbreviated to “Kev.”
Many also found the post “cringing” and were annoyed that Australian taxpayers were funding half-hearted jokes.
“When you cost the taxpayer a fortune and you love memes,” one wrote.

As Prime Minister, Dr Rudd had a reputation for being short-tempered and demanding of staff.
At the unveiling of his portrait as prime minister earlier this month, he joked about his reputation.
“You can tell the members of my staff—all 4,602—because they’re the ones who have PTSD,” he said.
“Some of them still bear wounds. Later there will be a therapy tent.’
