Leaked Google spreadsheet reveals average salaries at the search giant – where black staff make $20,000 less than whites and the gender pay gap is still very much alive
Black employees at Google earn an average of $20,000 less than their white counterparts, and women are paid less than men in virtually every department, according to leaked data reviewed by news site Insider.
The spreadsheets reveal the salaries and bonuses of more than 12,000 Google employees in white-collar positions in the search engine giant’s U.S. offices across the country.
Aside from countless eye-popping six- and seven-figure amounts, the tech company doesn’t appear to be upholding the “equality” portion of its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policy — with clear trends in pay disparity by race and gender.
The revelations come despite recurring news in recent years of Google executives trying to ban “offensive” terms like “man-hours” and “chubby,” or plans by companies to flag politically incorrect terms to users in search bars and Google docs. .

But consistent with these gestures toward “wakefulness,” the leaked salaries showed some outliers within Google, where pay rates defy corporate stereotypes: Women on Google’s sales force, for example, earn more on average than men.
Google’s average “minimum base salary” is lowest in two of the most expensive areas to live in the US: New York City and Silicon Valley.

And at Google’s many offices in California’s San Francisco Bay Area, where the cost of living ranks third among all cities in America, the average “minimum base salary” was just $39,962.
The statistic comes from Google’s eight office locations in Silicon Valley and surrounding suburbs, including: Mountain View, Sunnyvale, San Francisco, San Bruno, South San Francisco, Redwood City, Palo Alto, San Jose
The data was collected and shared internally by Googlers themselves, American employees have voluntarily submitted their salary, equity and bonus data for 2022.
Their spreadsheet was leaked Insiderwhere data journalists sifted through the numbers.
The payroll data includes employees from many positions within the technology giant, including software engineers, business analysts and salespeople.
It also included data tagged by race, which showed that Google employees of black or African descent earned, on average, more than $20,000 less than their white or Asian counterparts.
Indigenous and Hispanic/Latino workers also suffered from wage disparities.
The issue may be related to corporate culture, as in the US as of 2023, the majority of Google’s US workforce will be Asian (44.8 percent) or white (46.2 percent). based on the company’s own reporting.

The leaked spreadsheet also included data on how employee pay was distributed by gender, with the oft-cited disparity between male and female employees proving true to stereotypes — except in the field of sales.
Female employees in enterprise direct sales and female sales strategists both seem to earn more than their male counterparts, with the direct sales team earning tens of thousands of dollars more on base salary alone.
Across the company and among software engineers, nonbinary workers seemed to earn less in base pay than men or women in the workforce.

While the fairness between all these groups of employees may be debatable, one thing is certain: Google employees are among the highest paid technology companies.
Including bonuses and stock options in the company, the average total compensation for the average Googler in 2022 was $279,802.
But the highest-paid person in the data set worked in human resources and managed the rest.
In 2022, Google’s Chief People Officer Fiona Cicconi reportedly received a base salary of $1 million. Insiderreporting that other C-suite executives at the company enjoyed similar pay increases early that year.
