League of Legends fans are baffled by a new $500 Ahri skin

League of Legends is free to play, but Riot Games makes money from customer purchases. If you are a fan of a specific champion, you can purchase alternative cosmetic skins with new knowledge. In the main stories, Ahri is a nine-tailed fox searching for the secrets of her people… but with skins she could be an international star, a wicked witch in the woods, or a magical captain of an all-girls team. One new skin has made waves among fans, as it costs a whopping $500 at the highest level.

Riot has started a new initiative in honor of the the best of the best of League of Legends esports scene in the Hall of Legends, a commemorative list of the game’s greatest figures. The first player to be inducted is an obvious choice: Faker, a multiple-time world champion who is widely regarded as the GOAT. The Hall of Legends comes with an in-game pass, with 100 levels of unlockable rewards. This includes a Risen Legend LeBlanc skin, a department, banner, and other emotes and icons.

The second skin associated with Faker is the one that stirs all the controversy. There are three tiers of Ahri skins: Risen Legend, Immortalized Legend, and the Signature Immortalized Legend. These skins can only be unlocked through collections, and the Signature Immortalized Legend Collection costs 59260 RP, which is about $500. It comes with banners, borders, Faker’s signature on the splash art, a complete event pass, and in-game upgrades to Immortalized Legend Ahri.

That’s a hefty price tag, and fans are understandably shocked. “Sorry to my rioter friends, but riot is absolutely bullshit with this, NO digital cosmetic is worth 30,000 or 60,000 RP. No. Faker is NOT that cool bro,” one player wrote on X. Another player posted a Discord convoin which a participant asks: “Does it come with a fucking handjob from Ahri herself?”

Other fans commented that it is ironic to have such expensive skin in honor of Faker, as the player is known to play without skins. There have been esports skins in the past, but none have ever reached this price point – and even with their relatively modest prices, Faker has stated that he wait to buy skins like SKT T1 Ryze when they go on sale. It’s hard to see the value behind a macro transaction like this, especially when $500 can buy you an entire console or several incredible triple-A games. Some fans have joked that they will permanently ban Ahri from their games to ensure that happens no one can use the skin no matter how much it costs.

Ahri is a popular champion and Faker is an icon League of Legends, but the price has outraged many fans. Polygon reached out to Riot for comment but did not receive any additional information. It remains to be seen how many superfans will make this purchase – and whether they will ultimately take any heat from the rest of the player base.
