Leading US med school says BMI is steeped in racism as its based on ‘ideal’ Caucasian and ignores other factors to determine health

A prestigious US medical school reportedly offered a course over the summer that promoted ‘alarming’ progressive ideals – including several relating to gender, and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

The course, titled ‘Health Equity and Justice’, was held at Missouri’s Washington University School of Medicine this past summer – and some of its alleged lessons were exposed on Sunday by Fox News.

The outlet shared a series of PowerPoint slides that appeared to show the class’s anomalous content – including one that insisted BMI should stand for ‘bad misconception’ because it did not include ‘a person’s gender or ethnicity’ do not take into account

Another centered around ‘health equity’ argues that nutrition is inherently racist – due to the fact that the white doctor who invented the concept of calorie counting conducted nutritional experiments on indigenous children to do so in the 1940s.

The lesson then concludes with a series of points indicating the ‘structural differences between cis and trans individuals’, with one insisting that the ‘contribution of these structural differences to gender identity (remains) unclear.

The slide – unlike the others – appears to promote the recent use of cross-sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone blockers, even while conceding that the effect of such hormones on one’s biological neural network remains ‘unknown’.

In the leaked page relating to BMI – which stands for ‘Body Mass Index’ – instructors note how ‘current BMIs are based on the imagined “ideal” Caucasian,’ and should therefore be taken with a grain of salt.

Entitled ‘Why BMI Should Stand for “Badly Mistaken Idea”‘, the slide in question notes: ‘Current BMI cut-offs are based on the imagined “ideal” Caucasian and do not take into account a person’s gender-ethnicity.

‘Higher and lower BMIs (sic) can be healthier for different groups of people.’

Another bullet argues: ‘Since many people with higher BMIs are healthy, the BMI weight bias may persist.

“People in larger bodies,” it adds, “tend to get less quality care.”

It further states that ‘too much focus on weight can encourage unhealthy eating habits’, and the ‘BMI and weight bias’ created by the scientific system – which is mathematically derived from the height and weight of a given person – ‘can discouraged from seeking care, leading to worse health outcomes.’

The slide then warns that stigmas around weight can (cause) chronic stress. while insisting that there are better predictors of (one’s) health status.’

The slides obtained by Fox make no mention of such an alternative – although another wants to convey a very different message involving health when it comes to race.

Labeled ‘Racism and Nutrition’, the slide argues that nutrition is inherently imbued with racism,

To convey this argument, the slide presents a TikTok video in which a black man explains that the first person to determine how many calories are needed per day to survive was Canada’s Dr. Lionel Bradley Pett, ‘found out exactly what it takes. to keep the human body alive by letting native children die.’

The claim, while true, appears to insinuate that calorie counting is an inescapably racist construct as a result – with the smiling TikToker eventually concluding of the government-sanctioned experiments: ‘And this is how the deaths of indigenous children became today’s moment in White History.

“Happy Indigenous Heritage Month,” he adds.

Then, in a slide that appears to mark the purported lesson’s conclusion, instructors write that “several modalities demonstrate structural differences between” straight and LGBTQ subjects—before noting that the “contribution of these structural differences to gender identity is not clear (is ) not.’

In a final line, instructors write that the ‘effect of gender-affirming hormone therapy or type of regimen on neural circuitry of gender identity is unknown’ – while still promoting puberty blockers.

Dr. Speaking to Fox Sunday, Stanley Goldfarb, the chairman of a national association of medical specialists against the polarizing, progressive ideas being put into the American health care system, said that the slippery slope seems the most dangerous to him.

“Most troubling is their continued advocacy for the use of puberty blockers in children,” said the Do Not Harm doctor, referring to how this goes against the laws currently in place in the state where the school, led by Dean David H. Perlmutter, introduced, is in conflict. .

“This law is consistent with the best scientific evidence, as determined by five European countries whose health care systems have conducted thorough and systematic research,” Goldfarb said, also slamming the other chips obtained by the store.

He said they appear to be actively promoting highly political and divisive ideologies to his students.

Washington University — which was recently forced to do away with its handing out of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones on campus because of the newly passed state law — did not immediately respond to a DailyMail.com request for comment.

According to the school’s website, Perlmutter leads “a $3.2 billion academic medical center.”

The school is the third largest research-intensive medical school in the US, and boasts an annual investment of $1.2 billion in basic and medical science research.
