Lea Michele hints a Funny Girl movie may be on the way

As Lea Michele winds down her role as Fanny Brice in the Broadway revival of Funny Girl, she hopes there will be a film adaptation after that.

The original musical – with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill and the book by Isobel Lennart – debuted on Broadway in 1964, starring Barbra Streisand as Fanny Brice.

The latest revival debuted in March 2022 starring Beanie Feldstein, though she left the show after a few months and 36-year-old Michele took over.

It was announced that the revival will end in September, with Michele revealing this E! at Variety’s Power of Women event that she hopes there will be a movie.

She also offered an update on her son, who is back in the hospital after a scary health issue.

Revival: It was announced that the revival will end in September, with Michele telling E! at Variety’s Power of Women event that she hopes there will be a movie

“You know, I think that’s the hope. I think we would really like to make that happen. I’ve got five months left on the show, so if we can squeeze it in,” Michele began.

‘It is difficult. I’ve talked to a few people who’ve done filmed versions and it’s tough. But I think if we can make that happen it would be great,” the actress added.

She joked, “If I have to be there overnight…I’ll do the show, I’ll put my son to sleep, I’ll be back, I’ll film it.”

The actress first revealed that her son Ever was hospitalized in late March, revealing that she would have to forgo a few Funny Girl performances due to her son’s illness.

“We are in the hospital with our son who is dealing with a scary health issue that requires me to be here,” she said on social media.

The Glee star added, “I’m so sorry. Please send us some love and strength.”

When asked about her son’s condition at the Variety event, she shared how grateful she and husband Zandy Reich are for the support.

“My husband and I, my whole family, we are so grateful. We’ve had so much incredible support, from our friends, people we don’t know, our Funny Girl family,” Michele added.

Hope: “You know, I think that’s the hope. I think we would really like to make that happen. I’ve got five months left on the show, so if we can squeeze it in,” Michele began

At night: She joked, “If I have to be there at night…I’ll do the show, I’ll put my son to sleep, I’ll be back, I’ll film it”

Grateful: “My husband and I, my whole family, we are so grateful. We’ve had so much incredible support, from our friends, people we don’t know, our Funny Girl family,” Michele added

She clarified, “We’re not completely out of the woods and this is going to be a long process, but the care we’ve received from the doctors and the nurses.”

“My mom was a pediatric nurse here in New York, and the care and love they give the kids is amazing, so we’re so thankful,” she said.

When asked what her secret is to navigating Broadway and motherhood, Michele added, “You know, when I started the show and did the show, I reached out to so many women that I know were Broadway- are veterans and these women I seek out. for so many mothers.’

‘How could I do this show? How can I be a mother at the same time? I really couldn’t do it without them, the support and advice has been so helpful,” she added.

When asked what she’s going to do next, she said she’s just doing Funny Girl but has her first solo concert at Carnegie Hall in October, “which has been a dream of mine for so many years come true.”

She added that they’ll have “so many special guests coming and it’s going to be a very special concert.”

Michele has not appeared in a movie or TV show since the 2019 TV movie Same Time, Next Christmas, but she keeps herself busy with music.

In November 2021, she released her album of covers Forever: A Lullaby Album.

Concert: When asked what she’s going to do next, she said she’s just doing Funny Girl, but she has her first solo concert at Carnegie Hall in October, “which has been a dream of mine for so many years come true
