Laurie Daley to be named New South Wales State of Origin coach again today

  • NSWRL to make the announcement formal
  • It will be Daley’s second stint in charge
  • Comes after Michael Maguire resigned

Laurie Daley has been named NSW’s new State of Origin coach, seven years after he was first dismissed from the role.

The NSW Rugby League called a brief press conference at their headquarters in Homebush on Monday morning, where Daley is expected to be named as Michael Maguire’s successor.

Maguire coached the Blues to Origin glory in his first year at the helm before leaving to take up the role of head coach at NRL club Brisbane.

The NSW Rugby League has announced that Laurie Daley will return as coach of the Blues

Daley had been the front-runner for the vacant position for several weeks and enjoyed strong support from members of the NSWRL board

Paul McGregor and Matt King would have been two other options who could boast experience as both Origin players and assistant coaches.

Daley won six of 15 games as NSW coach between 2013 and 2017 but memorably led the Blues to a series victory in 2014, breaking Queensland’s eight-year run of Origin triumphs.

The NSWRL will also name the new women’s State of Origin coach on Monday, after Kylie Hilder stepped down from the role in November following back-to-back series losses.
