Lauren Phillips reveals why The Kyle and Jackie O Show WON’T work in Melbourne after her ‘brutal axing’

Dumped radio presenter Lauren Phillips has opened up about her recent dismissal from her KIIS breakfast show.

And on Wednesday Lauren told me The Herald Sun that she was still hurt by the network’s decision to ask for time on her radio show.

“It’s still pretty raw and pretty fresh,” said Phillips, who described the firing as “brutal.”

Lauren highlighted the unique connection her program had with Melbourne audiences and said she didn’t think a show in Sydney would work.

“It was very much a Melbourne show,” she claimed. “We talked about the things Melbourne wanted to talk about.”

“It was a safe place when this great city had been through a lot of things, from lockdowns to the cost of living. We made it a place where people can laugh and where people can cry.”

“Our listeners wanted that and they are smart. If I walk away with just one person saying the show is from Melbourne, I’d be pretty proud of that.”

It comes after Lauren seemed to be in good spirits as she and Jase playfully mocked Kyle Sandilands, 52, during their final week on air at KIIS FM.

Lauren was discussing what the ingredients of the popular Chiko Roll were when 42-year-old Jase jokingly told her it was better not to know.

“I think they’re former employees. They just grind them up, seriously,” Jase told her.

‘Are we going to end up like this, in Chiko Rolls? Don’t eat us!’ Lauren joked.

Last week it was reported that Kyle and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson signed a historic new ten-year $200 million radio deal that will see them expand their Sydney station into Melbourne – keeping them on air until 2034.

A spokesperson for ARN confirmed to Ny Breaking Australia that the deal means their work friends Jase and Lauren will be out of a job and their show will end in December.

Jase and Lauren’s program was successful for KIIS FM, attracting new listeners to the station and ranking third in the Melbourne market behind Fox FM’s Fifi Fev & Nick and GOLD104.3’s Christian O’Connell.

Jase and Lauren made the shock announcement live on air, revealing they had been informed they were out of a job via a phone call from ARN bosses the night before.

Jase – who started his radio career in 2004 on Triple M and previously worked on The Kyle and Jackie O Show – sounded shocked as he recalled receiving the news at 6pm the night before while watching his three children – Felix, nine, and Huddy, seven and Archie, one – to bed.

‘Sad news that we want to share with you. Last night we got a call from management saying the show will end at the end of the year,” Jase began the couple’s announcement.

Jase and Lauren got even more emotional as they reminisced about all the experiences they had shared during their two and a half years on air and revealed that their last show will be on Friday, December 1.
