said the star radio schedules: ‘It has been a great gift to be in Downton. It has opened so many doors. If another period drama came to my desk… if I loved the script, I wouldn’t be too nervous about stepping into that world. But right now I’m drawn to things that feel different.

“When the Downton audition came around I couldn’t have been more surprised that it was for a suitable role, I thought it would have a line or two.

“At the time, I didn’t know what it would mean to join a cast like that. Thank goodness I didn’t, or I would have thrown up immediately! It was a life-changing moment. I was blown away by the cast and constantly surrounded by brilliant actors. It was a great gift.
