A Good Samaritan has been stabbed after trying to break up a fight on a Tasmanian town street.

Police said a 17-year-old is in custody after an altercation on Brisbane Street, Launceston, on Friday afternoon.

The police received a report around 2.15 p.m. after a report of disturbances.

A man suffered serious but not life-threatening abdominal injuries after reportedly being stabbed with a knife.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Launceston General Hospital and is reportedly receiving medical treatment.

According to the police, this was an isolated incident and the alleged perpetrator was quickly apprehended.

Brisbane Street is closed.
