The school’s principal, Phillip Carleton, provided an update to members of the school community on the Gaven State School Facebook page Friday afternoon.
“At 12:30 today, one of our 6th grade students cut what we believe was some kind of battery, which in turn started smoking,” Carleton wrote.
As a result, all students and staff in the school were evacuated to the oval. The battery was removed from the classroom and the classrooms were ventilated.
‘The students of group 6 are not allowed to return to their block and spend the afternoon in the hall as a precaution. The ambulance and fire brigade are on site and are checking all students and staff who have been exposed to the smoke.
“At the moment there is no cause for concern. All measures are precautionary.’
