Former US striker Landon Donovan has explained a bizarre new hairstyle that caused a stir on social media.
Throughout his playing career, the 42-year-old always had a crew cut or an even buzz cut.
Several years after his retirement, the disjointed haircut, which left patches of hair on his scalp, confused fans when he was on Fox Sports’ coverage of Austria versus France in the 2024 European Championship.
Donovan provided an explanation for his new version during a hilarious text exchange with former LA Galaxy teammate Mike Magee.
Magee wrote: “Check your Twitter ASAP and probably fire your hairdresser,” with a “creepy” emoji.

Donovan responded by saying, “Where were you 7 hours ago??? I had a hair transplant two weeks ago and was told it wouldn’t show up on camera.’
Donovan last played in Major League Soccer in 2016 before moving on to short stints with Leon and the San Diego Sockers indoor team.
Donovan was considered the most talented male soccer player in American history before Christian Pulisic arrived on the scene.
The former Los Angeles Galaxy captain made three appearances for the United States, with his exile in 2014 a defining moment at the end of his career.
Donovan is part of the Fox Sports expert team for the entire Euro 2024 tournament, taking on the role of analyst and color commentator.
In his first match since debuting his new hairstyle, France defeated Austria 1-0.
Donovan is sure to play another match at the tournament soon, putting more of a spotlight on his new hairstyle.
