A landlord’s question about whether to fix a tenant’s broken shower has landed him in hot water with fellow real estate investors.

In a message to the Landlords Australia group this week, the property owner asked whether it was his or the tenant’s responsibility to replace a shower head that broke while the tenant was using it.

The post received dozens of responses unanimously blasting the landlord for trying to get out of purchasing the item.

“Please tell me you don’t mean it. Renters are not responsible for replacing or repairing fixed items,” one commenter said.

Other commenters asked if the landlord was joking and noted that the shower head looked cheap and worn.

Some noted that it was stingy landlords like him who spoiled the good reputations of others.

Some even noted that a similar item purchased at a hardware store would cost less than $50 new.

“Landlord hack, buy cheap finishes that break very easily, then make tenants pay to replace them with better ones,” one person joked.

Under rental law in Australia, tenants are generally responsible for cleaning the property and repairing damage if they have caused it, while landlords are responsible for maintaining the condition of the property through general wear and tear.

If a fixture in a rental property breaks and is not used properly, it is the landlord’s responsibility to repair it.
