Lainey Wilson almost quit Yellowstone due to father’s health before debut on the popular drama
Lainey Wilson almost left Yellowstone before she even made her acting debut in the popular drama.
The 30-year-old country singer and actress who rocked audiences during a performance of Alanis Morissette’s You Oughta Know at the CMT Awards said concerns about her father’s health were the reason she was hesitant to continue with the show.
“While filming Yellowstone, my dad was in the hospital and he was in ICU,” she told the Dutton Rules podcast.
“He spent two months in ICU in Houston fighting for his life – the doctors told us he’s not going to make it, there’s a very good chance he’s not going to make it.”
After the frightening diagnosis, the singer Heart Like a Truck pondered what to do, but it was her father who miraculously encouraged her to take the job.
Nearly quit: Lainey Wilson almost left Yellowstone before she even stepped on camera due to concerns about her father’s health. “My dad was in the hospital and he was in ICU,” she told the Dutton Rules podcast
“He woke up just in time, before I had really made up my mind and he said, ‘I don’t care if it was my funeral, if you have a job to do, you better go and do it and don’t come back until it’s done.”‘
Lainey said afterwards, “I had to put on my shoes.”
The Never Say Never singer was invited to join season five of Yellowstone as Abby, as a local singer hired to play at Kevin Costner’s John Dutton gubernatorial inauguration.
During the celebration, she begins a romance with one of the boys from the dormitory, Ryan, played by Ian Bohen, but is hesitant to take it further, fearing that she will always be second to his job.
Lainey said that while she was on set, the cast and crew would often check in on her.
“Every day we were on set, they wanted updates like, ‘How’s your dad? We pray. We lift him up,” she shared.
“Everyone just came to me and loved me as much as they could. That’s really, I think, what also gave me the strength to persevere.’
Several songs from the Bell Bottom Country crooner have been featured in episodes of Yellowstone.

Future: It’s unclear if the burgeoning actress will be asked to return for the second half of season five, as there’s so much up in the air whether Kevin Costner, who stars as family patriarch John Dutton, will continue on the show
Feeling good: Abby says she has a “good feeling” about returning to the show. “If they finish things in a way that…they intend, I’ll be there again,” she told ET. “We’ll see, they haven’t taken me to the train station yet”
After her debut, the award-winning singer made a tune about the experience, strumming her guitar and singing, “Yellowstone has been good to me. They put some of my songs on TV.’
