Kyrie Irving will not return to the Brooklyn Nets lineup for their matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers after serving Saturday’s minimum five-game suspension.
The disgraced Nets star was suspended by the team last week “until he complies with a series of objective corrective actions that address the damaging impact of his behavior” after posting a link to the Amazon page of a film based on a book described as ‘anti-Semitic’.
Irving could have made his comeback in California on Sunday night, but new coach Jacque Vaughn revealed today before his team’s game with Los Angeles Clippers that that won’t be the case.
‘I know’ [Irving’s] not available [Sunday],’ he said.
‘I’ve been told that. I can give you that.’
Kyrie Irving Won’t Return to the Brooklyn Nets Lineup for Their Game Against the LA Lakers
Nets owner Joe Tsai announced on Twitter on Friday the news of his catching up with Irving along with his wife and Kyrie’s family — one of six conditions that will allow Irving to return to the floor after being indefinitely banned on Nov 3
“Clara and I met Kyrie and his family yesterday,” Tsai began.
“We spent quality time understanding each other and it’s clear to me that Kyrie has no hatred towards Jewish people or any group for that matter.
“The Nets and Kyrie are working constructively with the NBA and NBPA on a process of forgiveness, healing and education.”
It immediately follows the release of a National Basketball Player’s Association (NBPA) memo stating that a resolution between Irving and the relevant parties will take place “very soon.”
Adam Silver said Irving caused ‘damage’ with his words – even if he’s not anti-Semitic
The email written to players was obtained by NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, who reported it said Irving had met the Nets, NBA and NBPA “on several occasions.”
“Kyrie’s rights, and the rights of all future players, are protected at every turn,” the memo read.
Though NBA commissioner Adam Silver has said the Nets star’s return to court will be orchestrated “in consultation with the league.”
Silver said there is “no doubt” Irving is not anti-Semitic this week after talks with the player.
The disgraced Nets star’s return to the team remains unclear after ‘anti-Semitic’ tweet
Irving sparked controversy by tweeting a link to the Amazon page for the 2018 movie “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America.”
The film is based on a 2015 book of the same name, which Rolling Stone described as “toxicly anti-Semitic.”
Ever since Irving posted the Amazon link to the film on Twitter, Irving has been arguing with the media, telling reporters, “I won’t back down on anything I believe in.” He seemed to bounce back by deleting the post without explanation.
After days of competing statements from Irving, the Nets, Tsai and Silver, the club suspended the All-Star for at least five games.
Irving, who was criticized for failing to apologise, eventually said he was sorry in a statement, but only after he received his minimum five-game suspension from the Nets.
Irving’s return date to the team remains unclear.
