Kylian Mbappe was shocked to hear England were 1-0 down to Slovakia in the dying minutes of a thrilling round of 16 tie at Euro 2024.
The France captain was speaking at a press conference ahead of his team’s knockout match against arch-rivals Belgium at the European Championship and was keen for news from the England match.
Mbappé was already a star two years ago when France eliminated England in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. If both teams reach the final of the 2024 Euros, he could face the Three Lions again.
Slovakia looked set for their biggest ever victory when they took a lead over Gareth Southgate’s team in the final minute of injury time in Gelsenkirchen.
Ivan Schranz opened the scoring, putting Slovakia ahead in the 25th minute. England then underperformed and tried to force a draw.

Another disappointing performance was turned on its head when Mbappe’s Real Madrid teammate Jude Bellingham scored an incredible equaliser in the 95th minute.
Bellingham was England’s saviour as he manipulated his body to produce a stunning bicycle kick from a long throw-in that surprised the Slovakian defenders, with Harry Kane scoring the winner at the start of extra time.
Mbappe left the press conference before Bellingham’s heroics but enjoyed a hilarious exchange with journalists as England trailed, saying “crazy” upon hearing the score.
Mbappé hopes to extend France’s stay at the European Championship when they play Belgium on Monday
The 25-year-old showed a shocked facial expression when he was told England were heading for elimination and beamed as he wrapped up his media duties.
Mbappe will be hoping to extend France’s stay at the European Championship when they meet Belgium at the Dusseldorf Arena in what is expected to be a fiery clash.
Les Blues boss Didier Deschamps is confident Mbappe will be in top form. The World Cup winner has scored just once at Euro 2024 so far and France have yet to score from open play.
Mbappé started the competition with difficulty. In the first group match against Austria he broke his nose, after which he missed the match against the Netherlands and returned against Poland.
