Kylian Mbappe ‘agreed terms with Liverpool’ after signing new PSG deal two years ago – but the French side ‘rejected the Reds’ bid’ that could have seen the forward move to the Premier League

According to a report, Kylian Mbappe agreed to join Liverpool but decided to stay at Paris Saint-Germain two years ago.

The forward endured a turbulent period in the French capital during his seven years at the club, but eventually left on a free transfer in the summer, joining Real Madrid in Spain.

It had looked like he would leave PSG on several occasions, but that only happened when he extended his contract for two years in the summer of 2022.

It looked like the now 25-year-old would leave the club that summer after an apparent falling out, just weeks after signing a new deal with the option of a third. However, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses from that point on.

According to The teamMbappé sought a way out of the club and reached an agreement on a short-term contract with Liverpool. However, this step was never taken due to the commotion over the transfer fee.

Mbappé’s contract in Paris was about to expire when he signed a new deal with PSG. In May 2022, the Frenchman confirmed that a new two-year deal had been agreed with an option for a third year.

He was heavily linked with Madrid and was expected to join Carlo Ancelotti’s team, but at the last minute he changed his mind and stayed in his home country.

However, reports suggest he felt betrayed almost immediately after his new contract, due to what he saw as broken promises from the club.

PSG were linked with players like Bernardo Silva and Robert Lewandowski in the summer of 2022, but ultimately failed to sign either of them, instead bringing in players like Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz.

Mbappé reportedly subsequently requested to leave the club before the end of the transfer window after expressing his frustration to senior officials, missing the opening day of the 2022-23 Ligue 1 season through injury.

However, it is reported that he missed the match due to the disagreement over his future, having asked not to play in the 5-0 win over Clermont.

Reports say both Madrid and Liverpool made bids for him, but PSG didn’t want to do business with the Spanish giants. What’s more, the Reds’ bid wasn’t high enough: it was valued at £168.6m, while PSG were asking for double that amount.

However, any issues would be resolved and Mbappé would play for the club for another two years before moving to Madrid on a free transfer this summer.

Madrid always seemed to be the long-term destination for the forward, with it expected that he would join Liverpool for a short spell before eventually moving to Spain if the offer was accepted two years ago.

This season, Mbappé made five appearances for his new team, scoring three goals.
