Kyle Sandilands breaks his silence after getting beaten by rivals Jase & Lauren in Melbourne radio ratings following their $200million expansion deal

Kyle Sandilands has broken his silence after disappointing the Melbourne radio station’s ratings last time out.

The Kyle and Jackie O show were beaten by their Nova rivals Jase and Lauren, who were axed by KIIS FM last year to make way for the Sydney-based hosts.

During Wednesday morning’s segment, the 53-year-old gave her thoughts on the results and progress of their show after being asked to appear on Channel Ten’s The Project on Tuesday.

Kyle explained that despite the results, The Kyle & Jackie O Show is slowly gaining popularity in the Victorian capital.

“I heard we were invited by The Project last night to talk about ratings in Melbourne, because there wasn’t much happening for us in Melbourne,” Kyle began.

‘We gained 50,000 people, but apparently that wasn’t enough.’

He added: ‘It’s a slow process, you know, not everyone wants to hear about dildos and ass licking.

“If we’re going to do interviews, we’re going to do them for a show with high ratings, not some crap show like The Project.”

Lauren Phillips and Jason ‘Jase’ Hawkins made a huge profit on the breakfast show, becoming the second most listened to program in Melbourne.

In the latest survey, they rose from 8.7 percent to 9.6 percent, knocking Fifi, Fev and Nick from FOX FM, who had fallen from 10 percent to 9.5 percent, into third place.

Kyle and Jackie O’s show finished in sixth place with a 5.9 percent share, behind smoothfm and Triple M’s Marty Sheargold Show.

GOLD FM’s Christian O’Connell continues to have the highest rated FM morning program in Melbourne with a 10.8 percent share.

3AW’s Ross Stevenson & Russel Howcroft is the most watched breakfast program in Melbourne with an 18.8 percent share.

Duncan Campbell, Chief Content Officer at ARN, said: ‘Despite their 25 years on the air together, The Kyle & Jackie O Show is still a brand new show for Melbourne and we are delighted with these initial results.

‘In particular the increase in cume [cumulative audience] shows that the show is attracting new listeners and if those new listeners are converted into loyal listeners, we will see an increase in market share.

‘We know it will take a few more polls before their presence really resonates with the Melbourne audience, but we’re excited to build on this foundation and are confident that Kyle & Jackie O will continue to capture the hearts of listeners in Melbourne, just as they have in Sydney.’

The shock jocks fared better in Sydney, with a market share of 14.1 percent and a weekly audience of 696,000 Sydney residents.

However, this left them trailing overall winner Ben Fordham of 2GB, who is almost 3 points ahead of the two, having dropped from 14.7 to 14.1.

Fordham gained 0.4 percent to a solid 17 percent of listeners, while 2GB gained 0.7 percent to take the lead.

Kyle and Jackie O have a 5 percent lead over WSFM’s Jonesy and Amanda, who are at 9.1 percent.

Smoothfm meanwhile reached 9.8 percent.

On April 29, Kyle and Jackie O brought their morning show to Melbourne in a massive multi-million dollar expansion deal.

The move led to the axing of Jason ‘Jase’ Hawkins and Lauren Phillips’ breakfast show.

Kyle said he didn’t care if his competitors got fired because in the end it was all about who got the most listeners.

“No, I don’t care. That’s why we went to Melbourne, we thought, ‘We’ve given Jase and Lauren a good run on KIIS FM, it can’t go higher than fourth in the radio ratings, so we’ll take it,'” he said news.com.au.

He added that The Kyle and Jackie O Show had been moved to Melbourne because it was a “difficult market” and their program could help win back listeners.

Kyle’s co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson took a different approach, saying she didn’t like seeing competitors get fired, but that this is unfortunately the reality of the industry.

“Nobody ever wants to throw someone out of their job. I wouldn’t want that to happen to me. It’s a double-edged sword, really,” she said.

The Kyle & Jackie O Show airs from 6am to 10am on KIIS 1065 in Sydney and KIIS 101.1 in Melbourne. You can also listen to the show on the iHeartRadio app.
