Kyle Sandilands blames his radio show’s ratings struggle in Melbourne on ‘pearl clutching’ listeners: ‘It is your fault’

It’s Sydney’s number one breakfast show.

But the Kyle and Jackie O-Show is still struggling to win over listeners in Melbourne since launching in the Victorian capital on April 30.

And co-host Kyle Sandilands focused on some listeners of his radio show this week.

On Thursday, the 53-year-old shock jock unleashed a vigorous attack on ‘pearl clutchers’.

Kyle also had to deal with dumped KIIS FM star Jason ‘Jase’ Hawkins and co-host Lauren Phillips, who were suspended last year to make way for Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson’s major expansion from Sydney to Melbourne.

The famously outspoken radio host started his speech by “blaming everyone in Melbourne” for the Kyle and Jackie O Show’s poor ratings.

He continued, “It’s your fault, you’re late to the party, you guys are gems, you all love the damn show that used to be here.

“They got number one for one month and now they’re starting to go back again, but everyone stays (a long censor beep)… over it.

‘If you want to listen to s***, listen to s***, that’s fine with me.

“At the end of the day, he was [Jase Hawkins] is a ranga from Brisbane, he’s not even a Melbourne guy, so who’s the joke? Pests.’

Kyle was sent packing after a Melbourne listener complained about the number of games played on the show.

“This is senior management again sticking its nose in: ‘Oh, this is a great idea, let’s play games we made 15 years ago,'” he said.

Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph reported on Saturday that ARN, owners of KIIS FM, plan to ‘clean up’ the heavy sexual content of the Kyle and Jackie O Show – which appears to have been a turn-off for listeners in Melbourne.

Last week, Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson once again claimed the coveted title as Sydney’s number one breakfast show in the latest GfK Radio Ratings.

KIIS 1065’s Kyle & Jackie O Show achieved their 46th consecutive survey as the top FM breakfast show, as the Sydney station finished in first place.

The Kyle & Jackie O Show achieved a 13.7 percent share on KIIS 1065, attracting a weekly audience of 735,000 listeners in Sydney.

But the show is still struggling to break into the Melbourne market, with just a 5.2 per cent share despite attracting 420,000 listeners every week in the Victorian capital.

Meanwhile, dumped KIIS FM star Jason ‘Jase’ Hawkins says he won’t be listening to The Kyle and Jackie O Show after slowly losing his radio to the pair.

Last month, The Jase and Lauren Show, which now airs on rival network Nova FM, was crowned Melbourne’s most listened to breakfast program in the competition.

Although the pair have achieved the ultimate revenge by topping the radio ratings in Melbourne, Jason has no time for his rivals – because their show isn’t child-friendly.

“I was in the car the other day, it was the weekend and their best (Kyle & Jackie O’s) was on and I immediately turned it off,” he tells the Herald Sun.

“I had kids in the car on the way to sports and in the first 20 seconds it was stuff I didn’t want my kids to hear, so whether I wanted to listen to it or not, I couldn’t.”

Jason went on to explain that he was “very emotional” when the ratings came in, marking his and Lauren’s ultimate revenge on the radio titans.

“I think for a long time I always felt that we weren’t really taken seriously in this market because we’re not big high-profile TV celebrity names, former footballers or big celebrities,” he said.

“I just always felt like we were seen as small fish in a big pond and people didn’t really consider us serious contenders, so it finally felt like we had a right to be here.”

Kyle and Jackie O brought their breakfast radio show to Melbourne in April in a massive multi-million dollar expansion deal, leading to the axing of Jase and Lauren’s KIIS FM breakfast show.

At the time, an unapologetic Kyle said he was indifferent to his competitors being fired because it ultimately came down to who attracted the most listeners.

‘No, I don’t care. That’s why we went to Melbourne, we were like, ‘We’ve given this Jase and Lauren on KIIS FM a good run, it can’t get past fourth in the radio ratings, so we’ll take it,'” he shared news.com.au.
