Kyle MacLachlan pens a touching tribute to his late Twin Peaks co-star Piper Laurie: ‘The vivacious energy she brought to Catherine will live on forever’

Just days after beloved Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning actress Piper Laurie passed away, her Twin Peaks co-star Kyle McLachlan has paid tribute to her.

The actress had been ill for some time before passing away at her home in Los Angeles on Saturday at the age of 91.

MacLachlan shared some photos from Twin Peaks – for which Laurie was nominated in back-to-back years (1990-91) for her role as Catherine Martel – plus a heartfelt tribute.

“Losing a member of the Twin Peaks family is never easy and the death of #PiperLaurie is no different,” McLachlan began.

“She was such a caring presence and an incredible force on screen. “The vibrant energy that Catherine brought will live on forever,” he added.

Laurie played Catherine Martel, a businesswoman and husband to Pete Martel (Jack Nance) and Josie’s sister-in-law (Joan Chan).

She received a nomination in 1990 for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series, losing to Patricia Wettig (thirty-something).

She was also nominated the following year in 1991, but for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, losing to Madge Sinclair (Gabriel’s Fire).

Although she appeared in both of the original seasons that aired on ABC in 1990 and 1991, she did not return for the Showtime reboot that debuted in 2017.

Laurie was born in Detroit, but signed to Universal Studios at just 17 in 1949 and made her acting debut in the 1950s with Louise starring Ronald Reagan, whom she briefly dated at 18 before he married Nancy Davis.

Although she worked consistently throughout the 1950s, she eventually became frustrated with the roles she was offered and moved to New York to seek work on the stage and in television.

She was eventually lured back to Hollywood a few years later to star alongside Paul Newman in Hustler.
