Scans of Kurtley Beale are expected to confirm the recalled Wallabies veteran has ruptured his Achilles tendon, potentially ending his rugby career.

The 35-year-old, who was announced in Joe Schmidt’s first 38-man squad last week, was given a helping hand off the field during the club’s rugby match in Sydney on Saturday.

The all-round player came on as a substitute for Randwick against Eastern Suburbs, but remained untouched in the backfield.

A Wallabies spokesman said Beale would undergo scans on Monday as he is suspected of having an Achilles tendon injury.

Beale was set to return to the national side and add to his 95-Test career after last playing for the Wallabies in 2021.

Australia’s first Test match under new coach Schmidt is against Wales at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium on Saturday, with a second match in Melbourne on July 13.

Wales’ double-header will be followed by a one-off Test against Georgia in Sydney on July 20.

Beale was reportedly cleared to play for Randwick after being told he would not play against the Welsh next week.

He had returned to rugby with the Western Force this Super Season after a 12-month withdrawal by Rugby Australia following serious legal charges, of which he was acquitted.

Beale made his debut for Australia in 2008 and had said he hoped to stake his claim for selection for next year’s series against the British and Irish Lions.

“I’m just super excited to be back among the boys and really excited about the opportunity that’s ahead of me,” he said of his Wallabies remembrance.

It’s been a while, but I’m ready to get started.

‘Although at the time you might think it’s a gamble, I’ve always had a lot of self-confidence.’

Schmidt, who took over after Eddie Jones’ disastrous World Cup season, will announce his matchday selection on Thursday.
