EXCLUSIVE: Twist in Wallabies star Kurtley Beale accuses of rape in Bondi pub toilet as police move to protect alleged victim: ‘Keep away from her’

  • Kurtley Beale granted bail after facing court on Saturday
  • Rugby player accused of alleged sexual assault
  • Beale cannot come within 100 meters of where the alleged victim lives

Wallabies star Kurtley Beale has received a restraining order to protect the woman he is accused of raping at a pub in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

The interim warrant for apprehended violence was issued after Beale was granted bail on four counts of sexual assault over the weekend.

Under the terms of the order, Beale is not to approach or contact the 28-year-old woman he allegedly raped in any way except through an attorney.

Neither should he try to find the woman, nor come closer than 100 m from where he lives or works.

Standard AVO conditions prevent Beale from assaulting, threatening, stalking, harassing, or intimidating the alleged victim or anyone with whom he is in a domestic relationship.

There is no indication that Beale did any of those things, just that the police sought the warrant.

Beale had the support of his wife Maddi, who gave birth to the couple’s first child in October, as his bail application was granted at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.

The 34-year-old man had spent last Friday night in cells at Surry Hills Police Station after being arrested in Kingsford that afternoon.

Police allege Beale sexually assaulted a 28-year-old woman in the bathrooms of the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi on December 17.

The court heard that there was a recorded conversation between Beale and his alleged victim and that the rugby player allegedly sent a message to his friend saying he had been “wrong”.

Beale has been charged with two counts of sexually touching another person without consent, inciting another person to sexually touch him without consent, and having sexual intercourse without consent.

The court heard that Beale denied the allegations.

Prosecutor Scott Thompson told the court that police had recorded a conversation between Beale and the alleged victim.

‘That conversation alludes to what I would say [were] admissions,’ he said.

Sergeant Thompson told the court that Beale had allegedly sent a message to a friend saying: “Yes, I was wrong, I was in the pub before Chrissy.”

But Beale’s attorney, Stephen Stanton, argued that the calls and text were “an admission of infidelity, no more, no less,” and unrelated to the assault allegations.

Beale, who has played 95 Tests for Australia, has been granted bail on the condition that he does not contact the alleged victim or enter an airport.

He has also been forced to surrender his passport and must report to Waverley police station twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays.

A stone-faced Maddi was seen walking out of court and ignoring the media following the judge's decision to grant her partner bail.

The sexual assault charges will be mentioned in Waverley Local Court on March 22 and the arrest warrant will be mentioned next month.

Rugby Australia said in a statement on Friday that Beale had been suspended while he continued to appear in court.

“Kurtley Beale has been suspended from all forms of rugby with immediate effect pending the conclusion of legal proceedings,” it read.

“This step follows Mr. Beale’s arrest and subsequent felony charge, and is in line with Rugby Australia’s Code of Conduct for Professional Players.”

Beale participated in a training camp of 44 Wallabies on the Gold Coast last week.

He recently returned to Australia after spending several years playing in France ahead of the Super Rugby season for the NSW Waratahs.

Beale has spent his Super Rugby career of over a decade with the Waratahs, plus a brief spell with the Melbourne Rebels.
