It’s official – Kubernetes has never been more popular

The majority of cloud developers now use Kubernetes and containers as part of their day-to-day operations, according to new research from Civo that found 51% of them do so.

Of those deploying Kubernetes, 57% of the 1,000 cloud developers surveyed said they had seen an increase in the number of Kubernetes clusters within their organization over the past 12 months.

The overall adoption level differed depending on the type of IT environment you looked at: 35% of respondents deploy Kubernetes through on-premises servers, while 27% choose to deploy it in data centers, 39% deploy it within public clouds, and 29% use it within private clouds.

So, why is Kubernetes usage growing?

The two most common benefits cited by Civo respondents were easy scaling of work, which was chosen by 36% of respondents, and easy management of containers, which was chosen by 35%.

The report also highlighted some issues that may be holding back adoption of the technology. 54% of those surveyed said they see the complexity around Kubernetes as slowing down their use of containers, a marked increase from 47% in 2021.

In addition, security can also be a factor holding back adoption. According to Civvo, 66% of developers are concerned about the security impact of Kubernetes vulnerabilities, and just over 50% of developers said misconfigurations or exposures caused their Kubernetes security concerns.

These fears are probably rooted in very real causes; in May 2022, non-profit organization The Shadowserver Foundation found that 84% of systems using container orchestration systems were accessible to some degree over the Internet, for a total of 381,654 systems.

Container-based environments can be set up for even more growth on the horizon.

Gartner expects this trend to continue and more than in 2027 90% of global organizations will run workloads as containerized applications.
