Kristin Cavallari caught an intruder ‘crawling on my bedroom floor’ during family vacation in the Bahamas
Kristin Cavallari once caught an intruder “crawling on my bedroom floor” while she was quarantined at a gated resort in the Bahamas with then-husband Jay Cutler, their three children and two friends from March to April 2020, when the coronavirus swept the world.
Earlier that same day, the 37-year-old Let’s Be Honest podcaster had called a handyman to fix a broken HVAC unit while she was putting all the jewelry from her Uncommon James brand on the counter of a cabinet.
‘I had [my eldest son] Cam is in bed with me. Cam and I were sleeping,” Kristin recalled of her Tuesday episode podcast.
“And I woke up to a man crawling across my bedroom floor…to go to the closet to get the Uncommon James jewelry.”
Cavallari’s first instinct was to scream, “What the hell are you doing?!”
“I just said it and this guy gets up and runs out the door. And guys, he had a balaclava on, full black arms, black pants, like the whole thing,” the Uncommon James founder marveled.

‘And I said, “Oh, f***.” That wasn’t Jay. I don’t know what that was, but since Camden was in bed with me, I didn’t scream. I didn’t scream. At those moments you think you would, but your instincts just kick in. I really felt like I was in Mission Impossible.”
Kristin was already sleeping in a separate bedroom from the 41-year-old Free Beer founder, whom she texted to no avail at 1 a.m.
“F***, I have to go into the house alone and leave my son here in bed,” Cavallari recalled.
“Jay was upstairs [our younger children] Jackson and Saylor… I woke Jay up and once I woke Jay up I got really nervous. Then I start [to get] really scared. I started shaking and then I was able to process what had just happened. But until that moment I wasn’t afraid. I was very calm. You’re just running away from your instincts.’
The intruder – the HVAC maintenance guy – ended up stealing “all the money we had in a backpack,” but they “eventually got it back.”
‘My children still don’t know [this] to this day,” said the author of the cookbook Truly Simple.
‘That was one of the scariest things I’ve ever experienced. I probably won’t tell them until they’re adults. Because I think there are some things children don’t need to know.’
Kristin and Jay returned to Nashville on April 7, 2020, and just 19 days later, they were official announced they legally separated after seven years of marriage, but their divorce was not finalized until 2022.
Cavallari has custody of their children: son Camden, 12; son Jaxon, 10; and daughter Saylor, 9 – leading up to Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, but Cutler will have custody from Christmas afternoon through Jan. 2.
