Kobbie Mainoo ‘is on verge of doubling Man United wage to £20,000 per week WITHOUT signing a new deal thanks to clause in current contract’ after impressing with performances

  • Kobbie Mainoo continued to win admirers after returning from injury
  • Now he is reportedly about to double his salary thanks to a clause in his contract
  • Andre Onana's place as Man United's number 1 is in doubt Listen to It's All Kicking Off

Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly planning to double his wages at Manchester United – without signing a new contract.

The 18-year-old midfielder currently earns £10,000 a week and signed a contract until 2026 earlier this year, but could earn £20,000 in the future.

In a turbulent season on and off the pitch for United, Mainoo has become an oasis of calm, playing the last three games after returning from a devastating ankle injury in pre-season.

And the Daily star reports that Mainoo's huge pay rise will come about because a clause in his contract says this will happen if he becomes a first-team regular.

Although the exact details of this remain unclear, the newspaper claims that Mainoo is close to triggering the clause.

Gary Neville called Mainoo the 'best player on the street' in United's 3-0 win over Everton last weekend, despite Alejandro Garnacho's stunning overhead kick.

He has since put in strong performances against Galatasaray and Newcastle, even though his teammates looked adrift in the latter meeting.

Mail Sport understands that his pre-season performances were such that the club would not have loaned out Sofyan Amrabat had the youngster not been injured.

He assisted Bruno Fernandes against Arsenal in pre-season and earned a start against Real Madrid before having to leave after 18 minutes due to his injury.

It's been a long way back since that disappointment in July and Mainoo has worked well to earn his place.

He got a pair of assists for the Under-21s during the EFL Trophy at Salford City in November, prompting one fan to say he was already the club's best midfielder.

Bruno Fernandes thinks Mainoo is a 'special' player who 'wants to listen to everyone'

While crowning him as such would be a rather knee-jerk reaction to the form he is showing, there is little doubt among his coaches that he has the quality to reach the top.

After the win over Everton, Fernandes said: 'I always talk about Kobbie. I also think he is a special player. What he puts into the game, what he gives to the team, it is known to everyone (in the team).

'I think he has great players in front of him that he can learn from, because he is playing with one of the best in the world, like Casemiro. Also Sofyan (Amrabat) who plays in that position – that's really good and he gets everything from them.

“He wants to learn, he is eager to learn and I think this is probably the best capacity he has because he wants to learn every time. He wants to listen to everyone to keep improving.'
