Kmart slammed over change to accessories range in stores across Australia

Kmart Australia has received criticism over a change to its range of accessories.

Customers noticed that the retail giant has started selling jewelry packaged in small plastic bags. Normally, the products dangle from shelf hooks of cardboard carriers.

Claudia, from the Gold Coast, denounced the brand for using single-use plastic bags, sparking outrage among thousands.

“Kmart, I’m so mad at you,” she said in a TikTok video.

“You start rolling out those paper bags, but you’ve started covering your earrings in plastic. Make it understandable for me, please.’

A Kmart spokesperson told FEMAIL that the retail giant takes customer complaints seriously.

We appreciate feedback from our customers as we know we have a responsibility to reduce our impact by increasing the recyclability of our packaging and phasing out problematic plastics.

“We’ve passed this customer’s feedback directly to our team at Kmart.”

After 48 hours, the video was viewed more than 60,000 times and shocked other buyers.

Though many admitted the decision was likely made in response to the “high theft rates.”

“If they wanted to avoid losing their earrings or getting them stolen, they could always put them in a plastic box and unlock them so people could buy them,” said one.

‘Probably because otherwise people just steal them – but yeah, it sucks. They’re a multi-million dollar business, but can’t afford to lose a few cheap jewels?’ said another.

“Everyone keeps stealing earrings, I feel like I’ll never see a full set again,” a third wrote.

Kmart employees also joined the conversation, sharing a lesser-known insight.

“Kmart employee here. those that are not in plastic bags come in plastic bags that can be removed for display. the worst,” one wrote.

Another agreed, saying, “Former Kmart employee here…they’ll be here soon, they’ll be delivered to us, and we’re supposed to take them out of the plastic before putting them on the shelves.”
