Interior designer expert reveals the tiny detail which makes your house look and feel much more expensive

An interior design expert has revealed how to make your home look and feel more expensive without breaking the bank or having to renovate.

Nicholas Holmes, interior designer and furniture buyer for Kmart Australia, told FEMAIL how to create a ‘luxury for less’ look.

Instead of buying new curtains or a carpet, the 38-year-old from Melbourne encouraged Australians to add an “unexpected” pop of colour.

“Don’t be afraid to try a color that isn’t already in the room,” he explained.

‘Try it in something small, like the Kmart lilac side table. An unexpected pop of color makes a space feel truly designed.’

Once you get started, you can always expand, but according to Mr. Holmes, you should start with smaller spaces.

He also shared two other ways to create a design space using furniture and decor items.

“Layer – if you’re just focusing on a small space, then layering will have more impact than spreading out multiple items,” he said.

“Investing in three pillows instead of three random items is an effective way to refresh a space,” he continues.

Mr Holmes also recommended experimenting with ‘glossy finishes’, such as shiny products.

“We have a lot of ceramics incorporated into glassware and reflective surfaces, which gives a space a special touch and a very high feeling,” he said.

Kmart Australia will launch a range of stunning new wine glasses, lamps and kitchenware later this month as part of the August Living range.

From July 25, customers can buy the latest products online and in-store.

The collection consists of trendy carpets, mirrors, chairs and small decorative items.

“With this launch, we’re bolder and braver with colour. We’ve also given every type of customer something new – there’s something for everyone,” said Mr Holmes.

The budget retailer will also be re-releasing a number of popular items, including the Gigi floor lamp, which went viral and sold out earlier this year.
