Kit Harington admits he feels ‘lucky’ to have kicked his alcohol addiction before having children as he recalls ‘hating himself’ when he was drinking

Kit Harington has admitted he feels “lucky” to have overcome his alcohol addiction before having children.

The 37-year-old Game of Thrones star, who has two children with his wife and former co-star Rose Leslie, checked into a rehab facility in the US in 2019 to be treated for stress and alcohol use.

In a candid interview with GQKit, who played Jon Snow in the HBO drama series, spoke about how despite his drinking he “hated himself” and struggled to take pride in his achievements.

But after conquering his demons and starting a family, he feels like “a completely different person.”

Kit talks about his journey to sobriety: ‘I was lucky enough to get sober before I had kids… because at a certain point I felt like it was physically and emotionally impossible to not drink anymore.’

He continued, “Before I got sober, I would stare in the mirror and call myself a**t. I hated myself. I literally despised myself and I wasn’t proud of what I had done. I couldn’t be proud. So the fact that I’m proud of being sober is a sign in itself that I’m a completely different person.”

He added that his relationship with alcohol, before he got sober, felt like a “huge monkey” on his back “holding me down.” The star noted that now being able to be proud of himself is a “relatively new prospect.”

Despite his new outlook on life, the actor admitted he couldn’t guarantee he wouldn’t relapse into his old life, saying it was entirely possible he would have a “messy, chaotic relapse.”

Kit and his wife Rose, 37, married in Scotland in 2018 and have a three-year-old son and a daughter together, whom they welcomed in June 2023.

The TV star went on to say that parenthood has made him less “self-centered” and the focus of his life has become on them.

He shared: ‘I say this with love for myself – I’m quite self-centered. I think I’m a generous and loving person [too]. But with children you just can’t be self-centered. They take that away from you. And that’s a great gift. [Kids] are ultimately completely egocentric. They think of no one but themselves.’

It comes after Kit revealed he ‘misses’ his family as he attended the third season premiere of his hit show HBO Industry series in New York last week.

Kit shared how he recently missed his daughter’s first steps while filming.

“With our first child it was so romantic, to use a better word, and with the other child we were like, ‘Okay, let’s do it.’

‘We know how efficient we need to be. Let’s get to work on parenting.

“My mom says she never remembers when we were little kids or when we were parents in the first place, because you’re so present in it. And I think that’s what being a kid allows you to be, incredibly present in the moment, because you don’t have a choice.”
