A three-month manhunt for a wanted man came to an abrupt end in a spectacular police chase that sent an off-road vehicle shooting into the air.

Kirt Field, 37, from Maitland in the NSW Hunter Valley, was arrested following an alleged violent confrontation with police on Friday that reportedly left four officers injured.

It reportedly ended in a car chase that damaged several police vehicles before a police car rear-ended the 4WD he was in and sent him spinning.

Field now faces 23 charges after the alleged kidnapping and assault of a woman sparked the manhunt.

His arrest came when Field was spotted by an off-duty police officer traveling in an allegedly stolen Toyota LandCruiser on the New England Highway.

He had been wanted since March when officers investigated the attack on a woman in the Hunter town of Upper Allyn near Dungog and a warrant was issued for Field’s arrest.

On June 2, officers were called to John Hunter Hospital after a woman was admitted with serious injuries requiring surgery.

The woman was said to have been kidnapped by the man six weeks earlier and held against her will.

The day after that report, police said Field assaulted officers during an attempted arrest and fled in a Jeep Cherokee with an RV.

A police chase was called off when the jeep reportedly swerved to avoid road spikes and hit a tree, causing the trailer to detach from the vehicle.

On Friday, after being spotted in the Toyota, he is accused of ramming two police cars when police tried to intercept him in a parking lot before the LandCruiser overturned.

Field has been charged with 23 domestic violence and traffic offenses, including taking or detaining a person with intent to gain advantage and actually cause bodily harm.

The man was refused bail and is due to appear in Newcastle’s local court on Sunday.
