A man has been dramatically arrested and charged in connection with a home invasion that left a convicted armed robber dead and the alleged victim with a partially severed arm.
Desmond Avery, 26, allegedly stormed a house in Kingscliff, northern NSW, about 8pm on Tuesday when resident Allan Kerr, 66, was allegedly struck several times with an axe.
Police and paramedics found Avery’s alleged accomplice Trae Laurie, 29, a convicted armed robber, dying of a stab wound in the Oxford Street home.
Detective Matt Zimmer said officers called to the Housing Commission home found Laurie lying on the porch with a “face covering” and a wound to the chest
Attempts to revive him failed and he died on the spot.

Mr Kerr was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with serious arm injuries, where he underwent surgery and remains in a stable condition.
A crime scene was established at the house and detectives launched Strike Force Chams to investigate the incident.
On Wednesday evening, police rushed to an address in Kingscliff to arrest Avery and he was taken to Tweed Heads police station.
Avery was charged with particularly aggravated burglary and committing a serious criminal offense.

He was refused bail to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court on Thursday.
Police will allege the Avery entered the home and assaulted the resident before fleeing.
They will also claim that Mr Kerr took a knife to defend himself, but he has not been charged in connection with the incident.
