Students at one of Australia’s most prestigious private schools are under investigation after they allegedly tortured and killed a native animal during a school trip.

Several students at The King’s School in Sydney, an elite private school that charges up to $40,000 in school fees, are said to have “decided it would be funny” to kill a monitor lizard while on a camping trip with cadets in late March.

The school has confirmed that the matter has been reported to the authorities.

NSW Police told NCA NewsWire they had begun investigating the alleged murder.

A spokesperson for The King’s School said in a statement that it was aware of the incident.

It is not yet known whether the students have received disciplinary action from the school.

The private school in Parramatta charges approximately $24,000 for pre-schoolers and up to $40,000 for 12th grade students.
