It seems that it is a king’s prerogative to be able to accommodate demanding requests while traveling to ensure a comfortable stay.
But even the most discerning of visitors may not have thought to bring the comforts of home that are said to be on King Charles’ travel essentials list.
Investigative journalist Tom Bower previously claimed that King Charles doesn’t travel light, with one of his favorite baggage fillers apparently being his own toilet seat.
His biography of Prince Charles, Rebel Prince: The Power, Passion and Defiance of Prince Charles, suggested that Charles once sent a truckload of furniture to replace fixtures in guest rooms ahead of a visit to a friend in the Northeast.
Investigative reporter Tom Bower claimed that Charles brought his own toilet seat with him on a trip to the Northeast
Among the collection of items were his own orthopedic bed, bedding, Laphroaig whiskey, bottled water and rolls of Kleenex Premium Comfort toilet paper, as well as his own toilet seat.
To feel even more at home, Charles is said to have even wrapped up two landscapes of the Scottish Highlands.
The royal family would travel with a line of staff including a butler, two servants, chef, private secretary, typist and bodyguards, one of whom was seen carrying his pillow as he stepped off the plane to ensure maximum comfort.
Even his security staff would help arrange the arrangements, with his personal police officer bringing a bottle filled with a pre-prepared martini that they would hand over to the host’s butler with Charles’ personal glass.
However, the requirements don’t stop at drinks and, unlike the late queen who would eat the same as the rest of her party, an aide would bring a bag of Charles’s food to a meal, it is said.
The king responded to the claim during an interview on Australian radio in 2019 with ‘don’t believe all that’
His communications director at the time, Julian Payne, posted a comment on Twitter from Australia alongside a photo of Charles and Camilla greeting well-wishers, saying the couple had “0 personal toilet seats.”
But when asked about claims he travels with his own toilet seat during an interview on Australian radio in 2018, Charles shocked listeners with his bold answer.
‘My own what? Oh don’t believe all that c**p,’ he replied.
Hit105’s radio crew took the opportunity to verify Charles’ answer with his wife Camilla, asking, “So he doesn’t wear his own toilet seat when he travels?”
“Don’t you believe that!” said the queen consort.
While visiting Australia with Camilla for the opening of the Commonwealth Games, Charles’ then communications director, Julian Payne, made sure Twitter knew the truth about the royal family’s travel habits.
Alongside a photo of Charles and Camilla being greeted by well-wishers in Brisbane, Payne wrote: “The Prince and Duchess’ tour of Australia and Vanuatu begins: 30 appointments, 7 days, 1 Commonwealth Games, 0 personal toilets.”
Tom Bower told the Daily Mail: “I’m delighted to hear that Prince Charles has nothing to fear from Australian toilet seats.”
