King Charles and Queen Camilla set to snub one of their Royal representatives in Australia when they visit Down Under

There is a royal battle going on over which of King Charles’ representatives in Australia will receive the monarch and his wife, Queen Camilla, during their visit in October.

While exact details have not yet been confirmed, it is almost certain that the Royals will spend just six days in Australia, split between Canberra and Sydney, with Melbourne and other major cities likely to be skipped.

Since the King does not stay in hotels, it makes perfect sense that the royal couple would be received by Australia’s Governor-General, Sam Mostyn, at her official residence, Government House in Yarralumla, during their stay in Canberra.

But where the King and Queen stay during their time in Sydney is more complicated, as they have the choice of several palatial properties.

Are they staying again with Mrs Mostyn, who has a beautiful second home, Admiralty House, in Kirribilli on Sydney’s North Shore?

Or are they guests of the Governor of New South Wales, Margaret Beazley, at her official residence, NSW Government House, which is located across Sydney Harbour from the Opera House?

Mrs Mostyn is the official representative of King Charles III in Australia, while Mrs Beazley represents New South Wales and currently hosts the oldest constitutional office in the country.

Whoever receives the 75-year-old king and 76-year-old queen in Sydney will undoubtedly also be allowed to hold a royal garden party on their grounds.

What could influence Charles and Camilla’s vote to remain in Mrs Beazley’s home is that Mrs Mostyn – although she represents Australia’s head of state in Australia – is a republican who would like to see her job replaced one day.

It is the first time Charles has visited Australia since becoming king. It is also the first time a reigning monarch has visited Australia since 2011, when Queen Elizabeth II visited Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.

He had previously visited the city fifteen times and spent time at a school in Victoria in 1966.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said planning for the visit is well underway.

“I am honoured to welcome the King and Queen on their first royal visit to Australia later this year. They are always welcome guests,” he said.

‘The King has a deep respect for our great people and has always spoken with great enthusiasm about the time he has spent here and the astonishing beauty of our extraordinary continent.

‘I look forward to welcoming the King and Queen back to Australia for this important visit.’
