Writing in his memoir, Spare, Harry said his father warned him that his family “wasn’t made of money” and that he couldn’t afford to support anyone else.

The Duke of Sussex said his father had a healthy income from the ‘lucrative’ estate of the Duchy of Cornwall.

She added that Charles did not financially support either the Sussexes or the Cambridges, with the exception of gifts.

He said those gifts were in recognition of his children’s dedication in fulfilling royal engagements.

But Harry likened the situation to being ‘in a gilded cage’, unable to move and being ‘fed and clothed’ in exchange by his guards.

The prince said he considered telling his father that the cost of providing Meghan with food and shelter was minimal, as she did not have much of an appetite and could make her own clothes.

Instead, Harry wrote that it became apparent that his father “couldn’t stand” someone who would “take center stage”. He was convinced that Charles was worried that Meghan would ‘outshine’ him and Camilla.

According to the latest figures, the royal family’s cash and assets have been estimated to be between £20bn and £24bn.

However, this includes £1.4 billion worth of properties like Buckingham Palace, which only belongs to the monarch in an official capacity.

The Crown Estate of property and land is worth £16.5 billion.
