King Charles delights fans with subtle It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia joke to Rob McElhenney in first episode of Welcome to Wrexham

The King has delighted royal fans after making a subtle joke about It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia to Rob McElhenney in the first episode of Welcome to Wrexham.

Charles, 74, made the witty comment as he joined Queen Camilla, 76, for a tour of Wrexham AFC’s stadium, The Racecourse Ground, where they met club owners and actors Ryan Reynolds and McElhenney last December.

In the second season of their hit Disney+ series about the football club, the A-listers revealed they had taken etiquette lessons before meeting the monarch in Wales.

The first episode has just been released, in which the king makes the joke to McElhenney, one of the protagonists of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

The sitcom actor shook Charles’ hand and said he now calls Los Angeles home but is originally from Philadelphia, to which the monarch replied, “I hear it’s always sunny there,” in a reference to the hit comedy, which Rob co-created .

He said: ‘(The King) knew it very well. He was very happy with his joke and he said that he has people who have to tell him, keep him informed of what is going on and prepare him for things like this. They had a great time.’

Ryan and Rob underwent a ‘monarchy boot camp’ ahead of King Charles’ visit to the club last year, they revealed in a new video.

“So the King of England called,” Reynolds said in the video. “We went to monarchy boot camp.” “It’s like the military, except your pinky finger is always up,” he added.

In the humorous video, Ryan and Rob are seen being guided by an etiquette coach, who tells them that their handshake at the Royals should only be “two pumps and release.”
