One is MOST amused! King Charles cries tears of laughter as he enjoys Highland Games alongside Queen Camilla

  • The games were a favourite of the late queen, who rarely missed the spectacle

The King today shed tears of joy at the annual Braemar Gathering Highland Games, one of his late mother’s favourite events, a day before the anniversary of her death and his accession to the throne.

A cheerful Charles, dressed in a checked jacket and a navy blue, red and green kilt, was accompanied by his wife Queen Camilla, who wore a navy blue dress with a feather pattern and a hat with two feathers.

The couple were spotted laughing as they chatted at the event which was held in the Cairngorms National Park, a short distance from their summer residence in Balmoral in Aberdeenshire.

Before arriving, participants took part in traditional Highland games such as tug-of-war and enjoyed music played by bagpipers and drummers.

The Braemar Gathering, the most famous of the Highland games, was a favourite event of the late Queen Elizabeth. She rarely missed the spectacle that takes place each September at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire.

Shortly before her death, the late queen was forced to miss the event, initially raising concerns about her health.

The royal family commemorates the second anniversary of their wife’s death on Sunday.

Prince Charles often accompanied the monarch to gatherings, which have existed in various forms for 900 years, with the most modern form being almost 200 years old.

The then Prince of Wales, Charles, still attended the event last year, despite officials saying at the time that it had been decided the late Queen would not attend “for her own comfort”.

The festival attracts visitors from all over the world, with regular participants from Scotland, England, Australia and America.
