What happened to the New Zealand singer Kimbra? The Somebody That I Used to Know hitmaker is unrecognizable after an X-rated makeover, twelve years after topping the charts with Gotye.

He had one of the biggest pop hits in music history with Gotye with their 2011 duet Somebody That I Used to Know.

But Kiwi singer Kimbra is completely unrecognizable these days after an edgy makeover.

The New Zealand-born singer, now 32, recently returned to the music scene with the X-rated music video for her new single, Replay.

The clip for the electropop track shows the star swinging around in lacy stockings and a thong outfit that leaves little to the imagination.

The singer’s powerful voice is also distorted with various vocal effects to match the aggressive production.

Longtime fans have been floored by Kimbra’s new look, with hundreds of people flocking to YouTube and social media to talk about her transformation.

“So much admiration for Kimbra who continually pushes herself artistically as she has been,” one gushed. “She’s absolutely such a fun musician to follow because of how insanely talented she is.”

“This feels like a true expression of her sexuality – she’s not just doing what society unanimously agrees is sexy,” added another.

In a lengthy Instagram post earlier this month, Kimbra explained that the song and video were all about expressing female ‘anger’.

“This song and its accompanying music video is about the compulsions of the mind and how, despite all that noise, we CAN find power and agency again,” he explained.

The Kiwi hitmaker is now an independent artist after parting ways with her record label because they couldn’t agree on the direction she was taking.

“It was a really scary time in my life because they wanted to extend my six-album album deal to a fucking eight-album deal and pick the producers and I just couldn’t let them do that,” she recently said. The Daily Telegraph.

“We were moving in different directions and it was clear that we couldn’t keep working together.”

His next album, titled A Reckoning, will address some of his issues with record executives.

‘Gun is definitely aimed at men in the music industry who have used words in a contract to “free” me, and then turned a gun on my head and got me. I’m really not scared anymore and someone has to say these things, right?’ she said.

The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks, eventually going fourteen times platinum.

Kimbra also found commercial success outside of Gotye with her hit single Cameo Lover and her debut album Vows, both of which took home ARIA Awards.
