Kim Zolciak-Biermann & Kroy Biermann’s financial woes led to divorce: ‘It was way too much pressure’

Kim Zolciak filed for divorce from Kroy Biermann, her husband of nearly twelve years, on April 30.

And now new details have emerged about the union’s demise, from sources who have spoken People.

According to insiders, the dissolution of the marriage was “long in coming, and in large part because of their ongoing financial problems.”

A friend of the Real Housewives of Atlanta star, 44, said: “She hadn’t told anyone, not even family. She didn’t even tell anyone [her] friends were kept in the dark.’

It was also noted that Zolciak had been planning to leave the former NFL star, 37, for a “long time.”

The source reported that the couple’s financial problems played a role in the split.

Rumors began circulating in February that Kim and Kroy’s Georgia mansion had gone bankrupt, though Zolciak attributed it to a “misunderstanding.”

It later came to light that the couple owes the IRS more than $1 million in unpaid taxes.

“The money has been a huge problem,” a friend told the outlet. “The million-dollar tax [payment] was just way too much pressure on them.’

A separate source added: “There is no cheating on either side. The money has a lot to do with the split, but there were other factors.

“He’s managing [the family] for a long time, so he technically had a job.”

People also reported that Kim and Kroy did not part amicably.

“They’re not on good terms right now,” an insider said.

“It’s a very close-knit family and this isn’t easy for any of the kids,” the friend said.

The Don’t Be Tardy star and former Atlanta Falcons defenseman are parents to Kroy Jagger, 11, Kash, 10, and twins Kane and Kaia, nine.

Biermann also adopted Zolciak’s older children from previous relationships — Brielle, 26, and Ariana Biermann, 21 — when they were minors.

Kim filed the paperwork, saying the marriage is “irretrievably broken with no hope of reconciliation.” TMZ reported Monday.

The star is asking for joint legal custody of their four children and primary physical custody.

The outlet also reported that she had filed for spousal support and that her maiden name would be legally restored.

Kim and Kroy met in 2010 at a Dancing With Atlanta Stars charity event and were married a year later on November 11, 2011.

The split comes just after it was revealed that Kim and Kroy reportedly owe the IRS $1.1 million in unpaid taxes, penalties and interest.

The reality stars also reportedly owe the state of Georgia $15,000 in unpaid taxes as of 2018.

Last year, the couple celebrated their 11th anniversary and opened up about their long-lasting marriage in an interview E! News.

“If you ask for a secret, lots of sex,” Kim had humorously told the publication, adding, “I think one of the biggest secrets is also communication.”
