Petras rose to worldwide fame thanks to her performance on Unholy, which was released in September 2022 as the second single from Smith’s fourth studio album, Gloria.
She made music history on Feb. 5 when she became the first transgender woman to win Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the Grammys.
During her emotional acceptance speech, German singer-songwriter Petras thanked pop music icon and LGBTQ+ advocate Madonna, and paid tribute to the late artist SOPHIE for her inspiration.
She said: ‘I am the first transgender woman to win this award; I want to thank all the incredible transgender legends who have kicked these doors open for me.”
“Especially SOPHIE, my friend who passed away two years ago, who told me this would happen and who always believed in me. Thank you so much for your inspiration, SOPHIE. I adore you and your inspiration will always be in my music.”
She thanked Madonna “for her fight for LGBTQ rights” and then turned her attention to her own mother.
In July 2022, Petras confirmed that her third studio album Problématique had been scrapped.
The following month, many songs believed to be on the album leaked online with Petra’s tweeting, “It’s okay if you want to listen to the leaks… I’m not going to release any music anyway, I’m f****d .’
